Shhht keep it secret
For nearly six centuries, Aywiers Abbey in Couture-St-Germain was home to Cistercian nuns and a brewery. In 2017, this magical and bucolic place inspired two brothers to create a daring and hoppy project...
Brasserie Lutgarde is a historic, family-run brewery. It was in May 2017 that Augustin and Victor, two brothers with a passion for beer, decided to create Lutgarde, the floral beer of Aywiers Abbey. This abbey has already been home to a brewery for more than 600 years for trade but also for the personal consumption of the nuns who lived there.
To retrace the history, this beer owes its name and logo to Saint Lutgarde, a mystical saint who dedicated her life to Christ and decided to join the Abbey of Aywiers in the 13th century to live the rest of her life in silence and prayer. Despite this vow of silence, this did not prevent him from tasting beers brewed by himself...
It is in this place steeped in history that the two brothers revisit beer in a modern and original way. Today, Brasserie Lutgarde has decided to put sustainability and local at the heart of their project while preserving the values of yesteryear: family tradition and authenticity.
Bursting with new ideas, the new generation brings a new breath of fresh air to the brewery. In 2020, these two passionate entrepreneurs looked further ahead and founded their own beer bar "Chez Lutgarde" located a stone's throw from Place Sainte-Catherine in Brussels. In addition to their bold beers, they offer the best of the micro-breweries of the flat country, as well as a selection of wines and local products to taste!
As a young and dynamic brewery in full expansion, Brasserie Lutgarde is looking for new talents in order to spread the secret of their beers. So, are you ready to contribute?
